By mastering this lesson you will be able to set chain link fence posts so that the fence is both pleasing to the eye and functional.
Chain link fence terminal post spacing.
Ask your chain link dealer for specific terminal post depths.
Line posts should not be spaced more than 10 feet apart.
The string should be 4 below the top of the terminal posts.
Chain link fence posts are typically spaced a maximum of ten feet apart.
String line level post hole digger stakes hammer sludge hammer marking paint marker or crayon 20 tape measure 200 tape measure shovel spade ladder wheel barrow or hand held mechanical earth drill.
As chain link fence posts are smaller and sturdier than many other types the holes should be smaller and can be farther apart.
Measure the distance between terminal posts and refer to post spacing chart to determine the distance between line posts.
For example if the length between two terminal posts is 30 feet then line posts would be spaced 10 feet apart see chart below.
While exact post depth will be determined by local weather and soil conditions holes for terminal posts are generally dug 8 wide and 18 30 deep with vertical sides the hole should not slope but be perfectly straight top to bottom.
Make sure the posts are plumb aligned with the centers of terminal posts and set at the correct height.
They ll be the height of the chain link fabric plus two inches.
1 the good thing is that you can dig all the post holes at once.
To set your posts at the correct height it s helpful to mark the ground line on them before setting them in the holes.
Dig all post holes.
For aesthetic reasons space posts evenly but do not exceed ten feet between posts.
Add 6 inches of concrete to the corner gate and end post holes only.
Dig line post holes 6 wide and 18 to 24 deep with sloping sides fig.
Also fasten the fabric to the top rail and line posts with tie wires spaced approximately 18 apart.
Contact the utility company to mark of sewer and power lines.
Line post spacing chart.
Follow the fence manufacturer s instructions for spacing which typically ranges from 4 10 apart spacing should not exceed 10 on center.
The line posts will be the height of the fabric minus two inches.
Center the line posts in the holes.
Fill all the holes with 4 inches of gravel and tamp.
Set the terminal posts first.
Dig post holes three times wider than the post diameter.
6 to 8 inches for end and corner posts 4 to 6 inches for line posts and 1 3 of the length of the pole plus 4 inches for gravel.
